WSLCB Issues 156 Compliance Violations to I-502 Licensees

As Washington State’s I-502 adult use, recreational marijuana program continues to mature, its regulatory overseer, the Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB), is increasingly flexing its stakeholder compliancy muscles. As of December 17th, 2014, the most recent data available, inspections of 117 I-502 licensees by WSLCB Compliance Officers have identified 156 Washington Administrative Code (WAC) violations resulting in fines totalling $24,505.

The overwhelming majority of the violations flagged by I-502 compliance officers is currently “Failure to submit monthly tax reports and/or payments” (WAC 314.55.089), which represented over 51% of all compliance violations to date. That the dominant I-502 violation is an accounting and reporting issue underscores the importance of professional accounting support for I-502 licensees and, perhaps, the need for a better understanding of their chosen Seed to Sale software, as products such as BioTrackTHC, MJ Freeway and AgriSoft help prevent this type of fail.

I-502 licensees should take care to not let the relatively small fine total dissuade you from seeing the substantial downside to regulatory compliance violations. For many WAC infraction types, under 10 violations over a three year period results in the revocation of your I-502 license. Of the 117 I-502 licensees inspected to date, most saw between one and three violations, however, one licensee received six WAC violations and another received four. That can’t be fun, so get ahead of your compliance status and make sure you’re ready for your visit from WSLCB Compliance Officers.
